If you leave the inn in the evening, it may be necessary to leave your key with the okami before departure. Some ryokan may lock the door, so be sure to check whether there is a curfew or not before leaving. Fees may be charged for any lost keys.
Your shoes will be in the shelves at the entrance of the ryokan. Remove your slippers and place them together with the other pairs of slippers at the entrance.
If you plan on going out on your own, take a business card or brochure with the name of the ryokan. Be sure that the address and name are written in Japanese. Most streets in Japan are not well marked and you may not be able to easily navigate your way back. If your Japanese language skills are limited, don’t venture too far without planning ahead.
