Out of the many machiya available, the staff at Kyoto Travel Plans recommend Shinmonzen, located on Shinmonzen-dori in the Gion, district above all others. This classic Kyoto street famous for its antique art dealers has a distinctive atmosphere all its own.
Until recently this Kyoto machiya, with striking latticework doors and slatted windows, was a flower shop known as Hanaiwa. Full of special places throughout-spacious earthen floor, eye-catching calligraphy and dynamic vaulted ceiling with exposed beams. The sunlight cascading through the skylight during the day and perfect lighting at night come together to create a sense of tranquility.
